Counting scales
When details matter
Counting scales are used for fast and precise counting of piece goods. In inventory, incoming goods, sales or in production and order picking, a counting scale helps to streamline processes, relieve personnel and save costs. Depending on the area of application in the milligram or ton range, counting systems are individually configured and equipped with the desired accessories, such as printers, etc. The reference scale can be combined, for example, with a bench scale, floor scale, pallet scale or other industrial scale. If counting scales are intended for commercial use, they are of course also available as calibrated scales.
Detailed information on these scales can be found directly under the following product overview.

The characteristics of a counting scale
In counting scales, the weighing electronics are coupled with computer software. This turns the scale into a small computer center for counting articles down to the last piece. For this purpose, the goods are placed on the platform or weighing plate either directly or by means of a container or weighing pan.
In addition to the classic counting of quantities, the scales are also used to check the number and weight: by adding or removing articles, the desired target quantity is determined. Some counting scale models are also suitable for error-free batching of piece counts. A number of models do even more. For example, they can be used to record and log accompanying data or to support a functioning, traceable materials management system.
If very large quantities or large-format piece goods are to be counted, it is possible to connect scales via measuring cable to form a so-called counting system as a weighing unit. Up to three scales - see counting system STZ/6000 - then perform simple or even demanding counting tasks. The actual counting scale then functions as a reference scale and determines the individual weight. The usually robust second and, if necessary, third scale functions as a so-called bulk scale. A number of industrial scales from our portfolio are suitable for this purpose: from pallet scales to bench scales, from platform scales to pallet truck scales, from floor scales to trestle scales. In counting systems, weighing and counting is carried out in large containers, such as wire mesh boxes, containers or even on pallets, which are placed on the weighing platform or weighing plate during the work process.
The advantages of a counting scale for operations are obvious: it is easy and intuitive to operate, quickly delivers accurate and clear results, depending on the equipment, with complete documentation for the inventory management system. Whether small or large, light or heavy - counting scales can be used for any category of piece goods. The scales are mobile, reliable aids in incoming goods, outgoing goods, production, shipping and inventory - whenever the industry is concerned with recording, checking and, if necessary, also dosing large quantities. -
The benefit compared to other scales
The often cumbersome and time-consuming manual counting process is no longer necessary. When recording and checking quantities, but also when checking, dosing and logging piece counts with a counting scale, well-trained users save a lot of effort and valuable working time. Compared to counting by hand, the output with these scales is therefore significantly greater. For the company management, this means that the acquisition costs are amortized within a very short time and, as a result, labor costs are significantly reduced.
There is another benefit for companies: In terms of accuracy, counting scales and counting systems are far superior to humans. They minimize the frequency of errors, ensure sustained high result accuracy and make a decisive contribution to increasing productivity. -
The counting scale in use
Whether calibratable, non-verifiable or fully calibrated scales, the main areas of application are almost all branches of industry: i.e. production, shipping, incoming goods, warehouse and logistics. A special application scenario is that of inventory: Where articles, goods and merchandise are stored and circulated in large numbers, the counting scale supports the annual stocktaking with the counting accurate to the piece.
Manufacturing commercial and industrial companies are the main users, but also factory floors and companies with a high turnover of goods - i.e. online traders, retailers and wholesalers, producers of vehicle, electrical engineering and metal components. Counting scales are also used in freight forwarders, wholesale markets, DIY stores, printing companies, paper manufacturers, and in warehouses and laboratories.
What kind of goods can be counted? Basically everything that comes into circulation piece by piece: stationery, coinage, tablets, small containers, medicine bottles, paper labels, envelopes, business cards, brochures, screws, nails, tools, connectors, car parts, DIY accessories and much more. -
The application process with the counting scale
Regardless of the respective technical specifications, the core procedure is always similar:
- First, the average piece weight is determined. A reference object is weighed for this purpose. If production-related deviations are known (e.g. in the case of welded assemblies), several reference objects may be used to determine the unit weight.
- The total weight is then determined by weighing the total quantity.
- Finally, depending on the counting program, the counting scale calculates the piece count automatically or at the push of a button by dividing the total weight by the average piece weight. Done.
Conversely, the counting scale also calculates how much the individual part weighs - provided the total quantity is known. In sophisticated models, such as the MeWa STZ 6000 counting system, the operating sequence is extended accordingly. There, for example, the accompanying data are also recorded and article numbers entered before the reference weight is determined.
These external factors have a major influence on uniformly accurate results with counting scales:
Influence factor 1: Ambient conditions
If the scale or weighing plate are exposed to vibrations, sunlight, extreme temperatures, temperature fluctuations, high humidity, drafts, etc., this can lead to falsified results. Therefore, the counting scale should be used under stable conditions if possible. And the user should make sure that the weighing platform is always free of particles and well maintained.
Influencing factor 2: The nature of the piece goods
Even under optimum production conditions, deviations in composition can occur, for example due to buildup. For this reason, a larger number of individual parts is advisable when determining the reference weight. A MeWa counting scale with automatic reference optimization has proven its worth here.
Influencing factor 3: The user
Even the most sophisticated counting scale cannot deliver reliable results if the user is not sufficiently familiar with the scale. When purchasing a counting scale from MeWa, this factor can be minimized: with intensive training for future users. As a manufacturer of scales for all branches of industry - with our own factory in Germany - we thus live up to our reputation as proven experts and are happy to pass on our knowledge to our customers. -
Counting function and other functions of the counting scale
Weight control and quantity counting: At goods receipt, the counting scale checks whether the goods have been delivered in the correct quantity.
Totalizing: Many MeWa counting scales have this function. At the push of a button or automatically, the scale calculates the sum of the number of individual counts.
Tare function: This is of particular importance, since large quantities of piece goods cannot usually be weighed loose on the weighing surface. To ensure that corresponding containers are left out during weighing and counting, they are tared manually or automatically.
Plus-minus control: Here, the quantity of unit loads by which the previously entered value is exceeded or fallen short of is displayed in the control panel or on the display unit. The plus-minus control plays an important role in merchandise management. It allows continuous control of discrepancies between the system and actual stock.
Piece counting: The MeWa counting system STZ/6000 offers this function. A specified piece count setpoint can be precisely metered via the display with color change.
Automatic reference optimization: The MeWa ZW30 counting scale and the MeWa STZ 6000 bulk counting system offer this function. It compensates for production-related irregularities in piece goods. The weight of piece goods is fluctuating by nature or due to production. Reference optimization minimizes these inconsistencies with regard to the counting results. Here, the scale recalculates the reference weight each time piece goods are added - always based on the net weight of all parts.
Memory function: If the scale includes a memory function, the piece weight of different items is stored and recalled as needed. This is particularly important when counting the same parts repeatedly. The STZ/6000 counting system also provides a memory for item receipts and statistical data.
Logging: The STZ 6000 counting system can be used to log weighing receipts, weighing labels, files and total memories. The weighing receipts can even be configured from the PC. -
The load cells
At the customer's request, our counting scales are supplied with stainless steel load cells with IP67 protection. They are therefore dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. On request, we can equip the scale with IP68 stainless steel load cells. It is then dust-tight and protected against permanent immersion and can be used in a damp or wet environment for a longer period of time.
All legal-for-trade load cells can be used for 2 x 3,000e (also for multi-range). The legal-for-trade Count system is also supplied calibrated on request. -

A wide range of indicators and evaluators - legal for trade or verified - is offered here on our website.
To start up, simply turn on the scale when it is charged or connected to the power circuit. The scale then runs through the startup program - visible on the display, or on the indicator. As soon as the scale displays 0.0 g, weighing and counting can be started.
Further information on start-up can be found in the detailed operating instructions included in the scope of delivery. In a product training session - live or online - we explain all functions and individual points and answer every user question. -
Service: Maintenance and repair of the counting scale
The housings and weighing plates of this aArt of scales, whether painted, hot-dip galvanized or made of stainless steel, are highly robust and withstand high stress, even in harsh environments, for a long time. The same applies to the weighing electronics and the load cells. We provide a two-year parts warranty on material and function.
For any repair and maintenance work, we offer, as for all our products, a comprehensive and fast scale service in our workshop. On request, we also collect the scales from our customers. -
Calibration and DAkkS calibration of the counting scale
MeWa counting scales are generally not calibratable and are therefore used for control purposes. Calibratable scales are all counting systems in connection with a calibratable weighing terminal, such as the counting system STZ/6000. As a company with calibration approval, we deliver systems ready calibrated on request. We are happy to offer further individual combinations of reference scale and terminal approved for calibration in connection with a large scale.
Special attention must be paid to the calibration of counting scales. Like all industrial scales used in harsh environments, they must be properly calibrated periodically to ensure reliable counting results, especially when a quality management system is in place. This applies in particular when reference scales and bulk scales form a counting system. Further information about the MeWa DAkkS calibration service. -
Around purchase and order of the counting scale
Before investing in a counting scale, considerations should be made regarding the external framework conditions and operating processes. Is the scale to be used in a hall or will it be located outside? Will it be located in a fixed place or is a mobile version desired? Does it have to be protected from dust, dirt and moisture? Above all, the type and size of the goods to be weighed as well as the containers used, such as containers or wire mesh boxes, are decisive. If you are not sure, it is best to contact us. We are available for all questions, submit individual offers and clarify all details and points.
In any case, MeWa holds a detailed consultation on the conditions with every interested party and also records these in writing. All details are clarified: prices in € (net or plus VAT), type and price of delivery incl. or excl. shipping costs, but also possible payment methods - all topics that are important for the purchase. Further information can also be found in our terms and conditions. -
Buy or rent?
If scales in industry are only used for a limited period of time - such as for stocktaking - or if a longer repair time has to be bridged, MeWa offers the possibility to rent a scale instead of ordering it. This also applies to our counting scales, which we offer for rent in a wide range. The € price varies depending on the duration of the rental and the equipment of the counting scale. We clarify further questions in personal contact with our customers.
